Beautiful, great rest. Best hospitality.
Mark, OH

We stayed at Highland Glen Lodge our 1st night in Anchorage, then went to Denali, and then came back and stayed in another B&B. Well, afterward, we just kept thinking about our experience at Highland Glen and must say we really enjoyed it the most. It was mid-week and we were the only guests, arrived from a long flight from Florida and were exhausted. We got in the hot tub for awhile, relaxed a bit, and then went to bed. We had a great night's sleep in a comfortable bed, in a lovely clean room, and then woke up refreshed and had a magnificent breakfast. We entered the large, exquisite living, dining room where the table was set for us with Prince Albert fine china, crystal, and silver. We had a lovely fruit salad and scones, great coffee, and then a Belgian waffle and omelet. Wow. But most of all our hosts were very kind, attentive, and absolutely wonderful.

Anchorage Day Trips

  1. Only a mile from Highland Glen are the best hiking trails in Alaska. A 2 1/2 hour vigorous hike up Flattop Mountain. Also, from the same parking area walk or bike the Power Line Pass traveling for miles into the Chugach Park extending up the valley and over mountains. A great area to view moose. You can also take a short hike around a small mountain called Blueberry Trail. There are many options in this beautiful area of the Chugach State Park called the "Glen Alps"
  2. A day in the city of Anchorage. Visit downtown for many shops, the museum, Bear and Raven Review, the Dog Sled Experience, see Ship Creek and an Alaskan Salmon run, the Native Heritage Center, Lake Hood - the largest sea plane port in the world, Earthquake Park, The Saturday/Sunday Market, and many other special interest sites.
  3. One of the most popular day trips is to go South down the Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet for 45 miles. On the way is Girdwood, and take the aerial tram up the steep ski slopes and see dramatic views of the Kenai Mountains. Also in Girdwood is the old restored mining area on Coal Creek. Travel eight miles further and see the Alaska Wildlife Center with many Alaskan wild animals. Go eight miles further still and visit Portage Glacier Visitors Center and take a boat to the Portage Glacier. There are many hikes in this area up to the hanging glaciers.
  4. A great day trip to see dramatic glaciers is to go 8 miles south down the Turnagain Arm and through a four mile tunnel to Whittier and take the 26 Glacier Cruise. On this trip you can see several major tidewater glaciers as well as many sea otters and seals on floating ice.
  5. Glacier Excursions Another very scenic day trip is to travel South on the Seward highway to Seward - about 2 1/4 hour drive. Here take the Kenai Fjords marine wildlife tour and see seals, whales, puffin, Orca whales, and the Kenai Fjords glaciers. Also on this trip you can visit the Alaska Sea Life Center and hike to the Exit Glacier.
  6. Other day trips to the North include the Matanuska Glacier, the quaint town of Talkeetna, and possibly a flight seeing trip over Mt. McKinley.
